Reading to This Little Girl

Lucy looks more like a little girl everyday, and it is bitter-sweet, but mostly sweet.

Her new word(s) is "up-pwee" (up, please).  She says it when she wants to be held.  And also when she wants to get down.  And also when she wants us to give her something.  And also when she needs help with anything.  It's a very multi-functional kind of word-phrase.

My grandmother asked me the other day whether Lucy liked to be read to.  The answer is that she likes you to sit with her while she flips pages.  But no--she doesn't so much like being read to.

In fact, it's really frustrating to even try to read a book that she has her hands on.  So we generally don't.  I thought we'd be reading Bible stories to her every night by this age, but no.

That will have to wait until she has the patience to look at the pictures consecutively while we read.

I guess it must irritate me a little, because I find myself suspecting that others are just flat out lying when they say their one-year-olds like to be read to.

That is all.  Happy Wednesday.

  1. My daughter loves BOOKS, but also doesn't like to be read to. In fact, she'll be two in November and we are just now getting to the point where she will let us read without constantly flipping the pages! She loves to point out the pictures. Don't worry, they are all like that!

  2. You're right, she does look like a little girl. I LOVE the pictures. She's adorable.

And yes, craving cheese is just kind of a constant in my life right now, but a margarita would be nice too. If it makes you feel any better, you'll probably get to have one before I do... at least if you can do one pump and dump before I get back in December :)

Also, I would imagine that until she understands more than one out of every ten words, she won't find the reading interesting. I mean really, what little kid would? I don't find listening to someone else read Hindi very interesting. I catch words and some whole sentences, but mostly it's just bla, bla, bla, bla (as Songjoo would say). Whenever it's Matthew's turn to read in class, I have to force myself to follow along with him while he reads instead of letting my mind wander.

    1. Good perspective, Carrie - thanks :). I will definitely have a margarita asap after Elliot gets here. Jenna - glad we're not alone on this reading thing. Thanks for commenting!!

  3. She is adorable, adorable, adorable! And the reading thing, well, I'm not a parent, but I know some of Shauna's first words were "I Do!", meaning, "I'm gonna do it myself, hands off!" Very independent spirit. Great photos!

  4. Yes, she's definitely becoming an adorable little girl! I have to say, one of my first thoughts seeing the photos was, "How do they get the towel to stay on her for more than a minute?" Abby wants to know, too, as she finds losing her towel to be very, very upsetting.

    1. Haha - I had never tried putting her towel on her like that before, and I guess it stayed on her for maybe 4-5 minutes. I think it helped that I tucked it in behind her arm, but other than that, I suppose it was just luck :).
