Long have I been guilty of a secret, semi-judgmental/dismissive attitude about diaper rash. There wouldn't be a rash if you would change your baby's diaper more frequently. Did you switch diaper brands? Just switch back to the old brand. Here, use this anti-fungal for the yeast and that cream for the inflammation.
Mrs. Stephenson tried to explain to us the emotional toll that rashes take on moms. I sort of understood it on an intellectual level. Moms hate rashes. Got it.
But I didn't get it then. Now I'm starting to get it.
There is something so frustrating about having successfully treated many other babies' diaper rashes and not being able to completely get rid of Lucy's. I will admit. It's emotionally tougher than I thought. This rash defies every rule of medicine I've been taught.
I have been this close to making her a permanent waist-down nudist. Maybe I'll figure out how those elimination communication parents do it and just hold her over the potty.
This, too, shall pass.
What all stuff have you tried? My daughter has some rashes that last for forever and we finally figured out that it has to do with her excema and having sensitive skin. We tried several brands of diaper rash cream before just using good, old fashioned baby powder, which cleared it up. Crazy.
ReplyDeleteHey Jenna--Thanks for commenting! I may have to look into the baby powder. She usually wears cloth, so we switched to disposables (temporarily). I tried Desitin (Maximum strength), Boudreaux's Butt Paste and Coconut oil. I thought at first it had Candidal (yeast) involvement and tried 2% Miconazole Nitrate for several days with no improvement. For the last several days I have changed her diaper every 45 minutes to an hour and left her with no diaper (sitting on a Chux pad) for several hours of the day, making sure to wipe off her skin as soon as she peed. I think her skin is especially sensitive right now, whether due to teething or something else. The powder would be a good idea to try next - thanks! :)
Delete:( Poor baby. Poor mommy. Yes, it'll pass. But darned I hope it doesn't drive you too crazy in the meantime. While Jonathan's rashes lasted maybe a day, Abby also had a season of particularly bad diaper rash. Hope Lucy's better soon!
ReplyDelete:( sorry about the rash! but that last picture of her is sooo adorable!
