Coffee and Sleep

It's been a good week.  But Lucy's been sleeping terribly this week.  It was a mystery to me, because up until now she'd been sleeping so well!  I could feed her, and she'd fall right back to sleep.

I don't know if you recall, but coffee became disgusting to me almost the moment I became pregnant.  So I drank English Breakfast tea during the entire pregnancy.  Almost as soon as Lucy was born, I began to want coffee again.  Last week I finally bought some and enjoyed a good 4 cups of it in one day.  And a couple cups the next day and the next.

Does that seem crazy to you?  It does to me, now.  My sister pointed out that maybe Lucy's not sleeping well because of the extra caffeine.  How did I not even consider that?  What was I thinking?

I was thinking, "gosh I've missed coffee."

Anyways, I am cutting back now.  And Lucy had a great night last night!

Jonathan's Birthday Party

We had a great weekend.

I was incredibly nervous going into it.  Up until Friday, every car ride taken with Lucy had been miserable.

She would scream from the moment she was put into her car seat until the moment she was taken out of it.

Daniel's sister and her family live a good 4 1/2 hours away, and this past weekend we went for our nephew's birthday party.

I was pretty sure it was going to be the most miserable 4 1/2 hours of my life.  We prayed about it.  I prayed hard.

And miracle of miracles--Lucy slept most of the way down and most of the way back!!!

And she was relatively quiet for the rest of the time, when she wasn't sleeping.  It was a miracle, I tell you.

I know kids are supposed to love the car and want to sleep in it.  But that was not the story with Lucy.  Until this weekend.  Hallelujah, were we ever thankful.

Jennifer did an awesome job.  The party was train themed.

I think I need to start conserving my energy now if I ever hope to throw a party as kid-friendly-fun as this one.  It was awesome.

This public park (in the medical center, close to Rice University) has a train that travels around it.  On tracks.  It is so cool.

Jenn and Dave bought tickets for all the kids and their parents to ride it.

And Rudy's barbecue???  I mean... can you beat that?  It was so good.

Not to mention the train cake.  With homemade icing.

So good.  So.  good.

Plus we got some naps in.  And lots of conversation.  Well, some conversation, anyways.

Good weekend.  Good trip.  Good food.  Good friends.

Chicken Divan

Have you ever had chicken divan?  It was a favorite when I was growing up.  It is delicious, simple, and low-carb.  I'll teach you how to make it.  Or if you already know how to make it, here's a reminder about how wonderful it is--make it this week!

First, if you have a newborn, strap her on.

Okay now then.  What you'll need:

Mayonnaise, broccoli florets, chicken, cream of chicken soup, cheese, and the juice from a lemon.  Oh, and curry powder.  Do not forget the curry powder.

Lightly steam the broccoli.  I recently figured out that my steamer is not hard to use, so I used that.  But you could also blanch the broccoli (stick it in boiling water for 1 minute followed by an ice bath to stop the cooking).  I'm making a TON of chicken divan so that I have some to freeze.  You don't have to make so much at a time.

Cook the chicken any way you like.  Bake it, boil it, or stick it on the stove top.  Or heck, you can even just buy a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store and take the meat off the bone.

You can use any part of the chicken you like.  I used thighs, but chicken breast works just as well.

In a large bowl, combine a cup of mayonnaise (I eye balled it),

Two cans of cream of chicken soup,

The juice from half a lemon,

And the curry powder.  You need 1/2 tsp of the curry powder.

Now mix it all together.

And add the chicken and broccoli.

And mix that all together.

Grate cheese over the top.

Bake it at 350 F for about 30 minutes, until the cheese is all melted and delicious-looking.

Serve it up by itself or with a salad (and rolls, if you're not counting carbs).

Enjoy!

Chicken Divan

Preheat oven to 350.
Combine 1 lb cooked chicken with 1 lb lightly steamed broccoli.
Combine with 1 cup mayonnaise, 2 cans cream of chicken soup, about 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and 1/2 tsp curry powder.
Top with grated cheese and bake until cheese melts, about 30 minutes.

Daddy/Daughter Photo Op

One of Daniel's coworkers told him the other day to take LOTS of photos, because babies change so quickly.

Done and done.

Oh and one more.

My Sister's Dress Fitting

This is the SMU costume shop, where all the costumes for all the performances at SMU are made.

Do you see Lucy?

My sister used to be a seamstress at the costume shop, and one of the ladies she used to work with is making her wedding dress (which my sister designed).  My sister is on the right.

Do you see her now?

There she is!!

Me: Do you mind if I set Lucy down for a second?

My sister:  Oh, we usually put the babies in drawers.

Umm... what?

Yeah, Giva loves babies, and anytime one comes in, we put them in the drawers filled with soft fabrics.

Oh.

Social Smile!!!

Yesterday Lucy smiled for what I would call the first time, socially.

I was taking a few pictures in an adorable hand-me-down outfit.  Just typical photos:

"big yawn"

"satisfied after a big yawn"

"tongue out"

I was about to put the camera away and moved her into her seat in the kitchen, and all of the sudden, she started smiling!!  A big grin that got bigger when I talked to her in that certain voice you use when you are trying to get a baby to smile.

SO cute.  She's smiled before, but only for a second at time, and not when I've been up close to her, talking to her.  I can't wait until she starts doing it more!  And BONUS - she did it again when Daniel came home from work and was holding her!
