England Trip - Day 1

We made it to England!!  I kept expecting problems at the airport yesterday--like we'd forgotten to sign something or like something would be wrong with the passport, etc.  But no!  They gave us our boarding passes, we got through security, and before we knew it--we were on the plane!

Fun fact--Kim Kardashian was also at the airport at the same time and was paged to go to her terminal, about 10 over from ours.  I was tempted to go check it out, but honestly I don't think I could even pick her out of a line up.  I am so out of the loop on pop culture right now.

Sleeping on the plane sounded as easy as falling off a log.  I am always exhausted these days, so would could be hard about getting cozy and sleeping the whole way to England?  Turns out it's quite difficult to sleep on a plane, especially with a newborn beside you and 100+ strangers all around.  I was nervous that Oliver would cry, which he only did once.  He was wide awake during the first part of the flight, but eventually he drifted off to sleep, and Daniel and I were able to each sleep about 4 hours.  So we arrived about as tired as we usually are.

Carrie and Ben picked us up and took us to their house, which is a charming 400-year-old cottage just outside of Bury.

We got settled and then headed to the town of Bury to see the ruins of an Abbey there.

The ruins were amazing.

This Abbey used to be enormous.  The guess is that it used to be 300 feet tall.

It was really impressive, and the gardens there were just beautiful.

After the abbey, we went to "their pub" (as they called it) for dinner.  YUM.  The food was awesome, and we each tried a different beer/ale.  It was so fun!

After that, we planned the second half of our trip (Scotland).  Can't wait to see the the beautiful countryside and towns on our itinerary!!  Day 1 of our trip has been wonderful.
