Block Time

"Block Time" is one of the ways I'm pushing imaginative play these days. It's so, so easy to stick them in front of the TV.  They love it, and I get peace.

I feel like some days I'm fighting against the urge nonstop, all day.  Little activities like this give them a space to sit and focus... the blocks are like paint, and the tray is like a blank canvas.

I wish it occupied more of their time and attention, though.  They spent approximately 12 minutes seated here and then were ready to be done.  When reminded that "block time" wasn't over yet--Lucy did stay put for another 10 minutes.  But then block time was over, and they were asking about shows again.

Too bad, "go play with each other" is not always the best parenting tactic.  Some days it's fine... some hours it's fine.  Other times... I think they need a little more parental involvement.

I'm tired.  And although it's been a great week (considering I've been single-parenting it), I'm ready for Daniel to return this evening.  I think the kids are ready, too.  The washing machine kicked on (it sounds a lot like the garage door), and Elliot went running to the back door, saying, "Dada!  Dada!  Dada!"  I told him it was just the washing machine, and he said, "Oh."

Moments after block time ended, Lucy goes, "Look, Mommy--I'm squashing Oliver like a bug."
