On Sunday I did another shoot of him. My friend wanted me to capture his whole chubby baby body, but I'm such a sucker for close-ups that I couldn't resist a few.

Here were my settings:
F/7.1
Shutter 1/200
Focal Length 50 mm
Distance of subject 3 ft
ISO 200
SB 700 fired TTL and bounced off the left wall

My newest "aha" photography moment: Did you know that if you stand really close to your subject, your depth of field will automatically be much shallower (independent of aperture size), making it much more difficult to achieve tack-sharp focus of your subject? I did not realize that. You can search for Depth of Field Calculator online and will find a calculator that tells you exactly how many feet of tack-sharp focus you have to work with, for any given camera lens and aperture. Amazing.

Learning moments from this shoot: Have mom roll up sleeves. Use a wide angle lens (18 mm or so) for full body shots, since the 50 mm lens is too tight.
The end.
Your photos are just amazingly beautiful! And what an adorable baby face! I remember his newborn shoot...so sweet!
ReplyDeleteHey, is Lucy's pink rug made of wool?
Thanks, Heidi! And oh, heck no. I wanted a nice, wool pink rug for her... but those are about $800 for the size we got. Hers was about $70 from Target and works just fine :)
