Lamp Redo

Inspired by this blogger, I did a lamp redo this week for Lucy's room.  Here's how it went.

I purchased a lamp base from good will ($4) and then a lamp shade from a different thrift store ($1).

Actually, props go to Carrie for asking for a discount at the register due to this little torn part of the lamp shade. Otherwise it would have been $3.  A reduction of 66% for a tiny tear... nice work, Carrie :).

I disassembled the lamp base and taped up all the glass/plastic parts with painter's tape.

In retrospect, maybe disassembling the lamp base made things more difficult... I'm not sure I would do it that way again in the future, but live and learn... this was my first project of this kind.

Anyways, I primed the shade and the lamp base pieces with spray paint primer.  Did you know they sold spray paint primer?  I did not.

This lamp is weird. Some of the pieces on the base are plastic and some are glass.  This bottom piece we think (we = Heidi and I) used to be an ash tray.

After a coat of primer, the base and shade were ready for the first coat of spray paint.  I couldn't help myself and bought pink.

There's already a lot of pink in Lucy's room, but like I said... I couldn't help myself.

After the 2 coats of pink spray paint dried, I got ready to cover the shade.

I tore up two scrapbook papers (12x12) into little pieces.

And then inked the edges of each piece.  This was the most time-consuming part of the project.

Then I adhered each piece to the lamp shade using double-sided tape and scrapbook adhesive.

Actually, maybe this was the most time-consuming part of the project.

Once the shade was all covered, I applied Mod Podge.

If you have not used Mod Podge before, you have been missing out.  It is so fun.

After two coats of Mod Podge, the shade is finished!

I reassembled the lamp base, and...

Voila!  Girlie lamp for the nursery - check!  Final cost = $15. Overall, a good DIY project.  Easy, cheap, artistically satisfying.  What do you think?  Questions?  Comments?  Concerns?

  2. THAT IS SO CUTE!!! I love it that I inspired your creation! Let's see.....questions, comments, concerns? Well only becuase how you did do it was so time consuming, next time after you edge the scrapbook pieces (fun idea) just dip them into the mod podge (or even a glue and water mixture! seriously) and lay it on the shade. It goes SUPER fast and I promise your results will be great. And yes, I like your idea that next time you can just blue tape the areas you did not want to be spraypainted (without taking it apart) Looks great Kimie!
